Buttercup Farm Style
Please take CARE not to CARE
February 25, 2009
We have been asked to take care of a very special item for someone while they are away to warmer temperatures.

We were promised it needs very little care…but were also given very strict rules.

Do not place in direct sunlight

NEVER over water.

In fact, we may not need water the whole time we are in charge of our house guest.

Neglect if you need to.

I think I need to consider adding one of these gems to Buttercup Farm….EASY TO CARE FOR, BEAUTIFUL, CHARMING, LOVELY……..TERRARIUMS.

LOVE LETTERS
I can not describe the “love affair” I have with letters written by friends and loved ones. In my Great Room, I have one of my most cherished letters framed and displayed. It is a note written by one of my favorite Authors, Alexandra Stoddard, welcoming me to an event she hosted last year. Over the holidays, my brother-in-law asked me, “Why do you have that framed?”. My answer was simple and sincere, “it makes me happy”.

Alexandra Stoddard writes, in her book, “Gift of a Letter” ,“Letters are magical. I never throw out a good letter. They enable us to nurture, connect and communicate with a worldwide circle of friends.” She also writes, “A letter is a gift. It can turn a private moment into an exalted experience”.
I don’t believe I have EVER thrown away a hand-written letter. In my office, I keep a box stuffed with my favorites.

This special box is filled with thank you notes, holiday greetings that are personally written, and letters of friendship and encouragement.
Picking up any of these treasured notes, is an instant cure for feelings of sadness. They also remind me that I am loved, that possibly I have made a difference in someone’s life, and that special moments can be treasured over and over.

GRAMMA’S QUILTS

Each night the Petite’s are kept warm by the quilt their Gramma made them.

Proudly displayed on each of their beds, their quilts are the “anchor” for each of their rooms.

I can think of no better way to fall asleep at night…covered by something beautiful, and made just for you with LOVE.

THE PHOTO WALL

Photo Walls are some of the most personal touches you can add to a home. The photo wall in my bedroom sparks remembrance and excitement that I come from a family of the great women and great marriages. To me, it feels fitting to be surrounded by displays of love and commitment in my bedroom.

My maternal grandparents were married more than 55 years.

Paternal Grandparents have been married over 60 YEARS!

My Great-Grandmother was one of the most SPECIAL, GENTLE, and LOVING people in my life. This picture reminds me of those traits.

David’s Grandmother, we have been told, was lovely and sweet.

My Great-Grandmother was fiercely independent, a great cook, and a world traveller.

This is my absolute favorite…My mother with me and my brother. I can feel my Mother’s love in this picture.
Do you have a favorite photo wall? What feelings does it conjure up for you?

THE PHOTO BOX

I do DECLARE that today is the official start of Valentines Day Week. In so declaring, I am going to spend the week sharing themes of how we “DISPLAY” “Love and Affection” at Buttercup Farm.
I have become the keeper of many of my grandparents photos. I vowed when I received these beautiful treasures, that I would figure out a way to share these images in a way to honor their legacy and stories. Here are a few of my favorites:

I love seeing my 85 year old Grandmama (on the far left) having fun in her youth.

So very Chic!

Ready for the Dance.
I found this beautiful tin box at a consignment shop for $3 dollars. I loved the amazing detail on the lid and on the box itself. When I brought it home I knew EXACTLY what I could do with it.

I keep the box filled with pictures, old and new, on the table in the Foyer. Perfectly placed next to a chair, the box invites guests and family members to sit down and sort through.

I don’t mind if the photos are touched, stacked, or left on the table. It makes the experience of being in my home more personal. I also try to keep pictures of VIP’s (my family members) in the box. If they happen to “PEER” in while visiting, they get to see themselves in our lives.

The Media Room-In Progress
February 3, 2009
So much going on at the FARM HOUSE these days! Back in December, I captured a wonderful wintery scene that really reminded me of how much I love the color brown in decorating. I mentioned at the end of that post that a “big painting” project was beginning and that I was inspired. I was referring to the start of our newest project….the “MEDIA ROOM”. Here are a few photos of what this room looked like when we began.

This room was VERY bright…but for a TV/Media Room it was a little TOO bright. The purpose of this room is for our family to “hunker down”, “get cozy”, and “act cuddly” . I want warm and inviting..a place to relax and let go. We don’t watch a lot of television, but when we do (weekends), this is the room we enjoy the most. The room is separated from the main living area by a set of french doors, so it is convenient to be able to shut the doors if someone in the house does not want to hear “the tube”.
I decided on a Formal “English” look using warm tones. The walls are an “Oval Room Blue”, and the trim is a “Mahogany Brown”. The outcome is YUMMY! This picture doesn’t to justice to the colors but I love the overall look.

This picture better shows the color combo.

I painted the closet doors, the ceiling, and the raised TV wall this beautiful dark brown.

And the window treatments….A dark black/brown denim with a raised print. I fell in love with them when I saw the fabric against the wall and trim color.

Still left to finish the room:
- Dress two more windows
- Find a lamp for corner
- Hang pictures
- Create a “London Wall” on the TV Wall (what is a London Wall you ask???…check out Tracy Porter’s video to see!)
In time Buttercup….In Time…..
Walls: Farrow and Ball, Oval Room Blue
Trim: Farrow and Ball, Mahagony
I am adding a link to this post to The Inspired Room . Melissa runs a “Beautiful Life” forum on Fridays.
